IBM looks to scrap Windows by 2009

Computing giant looks to shake up PC industry with new Linux based initiative

IBM has said it wants to see Windows free computing by 2009, replacing the operating system with pre-loaded free alternatives from the likes of Novell, Red Hat, and Canonical/Ubuntu.

Since Microsoft currently accounts for around 93 per cent of the market share, this will be no small task. The success of such a venture will be largely dependant on whether consumers and independent developers take up the mantle and produce new software for the system.

“The slow adoption of Vista among businesses, coupled with the proven success of a new type of Microsoft-free PC in every region, provides an extraordinary window of opportunity for Linux,” said IBM Lotus Software vice president Kevin Cavanaugh.

IBM are behind the curve again, we along with many other PC retailers are already offering Linux / Open Office systems, because of the general dislike of Vista.

The major difficulty is persuading Laptop brands to supply their boxes without an OS. The currently "unbranded" laptops are doing this and brands like Acer/Toshiba/Asus could well find market share disappearing along with Microsoft.

I'm sorry but supplying a PC without an operating system is quite possibly the most retarded idea the anti-Microsoft brigade have ever, and I really do mean ever, had.

Would you supply a car without an engine? No, of course you wouldn't. It's exactly the same with supplying a PC without an operating system.

And before any Linux nerds come back at me and say it's easy, of course it's easy. You and I deal with installing OS' on a regular basis. Exactly the same arguement could be used by car mechanics to say fitting an engine is easy.

well look at it from a wider angle.
if you were bill gates and you overseen the competition taking a lead in the market in this way the only solution would be to either bring an o/s into the market thats lisence free or to reduce the cost of current lisence fee of xp and vista ect.
this can only be good for all the rest of us

Retailer X -
You missed the entire point of the article. Nobody said anything about selling a computer without an operating system, they will come with some kind of Linux preinstalled.
