Report from the Samaritans highlights careers as particularly stressful
Over 40 per cent of those who work in the IT and retail sectors experience high levels of stress, with many saying find it difficult to deal with stress, according to a report out today from the Samaritans.
It found that occupation had a major influence on stress, with IT workers, retailers, caterers and engineers more susceptible than those in health, education, banking and finance.
It also found that bully is endemic in the UK workplace, with one in four people saying it is a weekly, or even daily, source of stress. It also found that 80 per cent of employees have been bullied at one point or another during their careers.
A third said that they were so stressed in work that they were seriously considering emigrating, while over half said work-related stress was beginning to affect their home lives.
PC Retail wants to know if you agree. Have you been bullied at work, or have you been the bully? Are you stressed, and is it getting to you at home? Do you dream of emigrating? Contact PC Retail and you could have your say on the matter.

This article struck a massive cord with me as I work within a small web based company. I occupy various positions 2 of which are IT (infrastructure, support, website maintenance) & Retail (product research, technical support). I'm averaging 11¼ hr days, 5 days a week with a basic salary of 15K & total of 23k gross of tax, inclusive of overtime, no sick pay, no fringe benefits and I am still classed as below the national average wage.
This level of work takes huge toll on me mentally and physically and I feel trapped in this catch 22. I know I am being under paid for my skills but have no extra time to get qualified let alone maintain an exercise routine of any sort. Any down time is for resting and fighting of service providing companies from taking more of my money than they should for incompetent service. I am unable to even consider getting on the property ladder, I am currently only able to sustain myself with a small portion of my wage set aside for savings. This situation seems only tenable due to my present state of health and resilience, which I can only hope holds out.
The high level of incompetence or more likely apathy within the UK workforce within the public & private sectors make life harder than it should be within and out of work. This, I’m sure, is a product of the UK having become the inefficient economic battery farm machine that has this high cost price for many of its inhabitance.
My best prospect and my current goal is to continue in this vein until I have enough saved to emigrate and lead a wholly different lifestyle.
Yours
Nathan
