Apple fails to cash in on Vista struggles

Macs fail to capture market share while Windows fights among itself

After 20 years in business, the Apple Mac still only accounts for three per cent of the PC global market share. According to the New York Times, the current share is a far cry from its 1984 share of 14 per cent. On the other hand, this years figure is a per cent up on 2004, perhaps a knock on effect of the iPod's success.

In the six years since XP premiered, Apple have had plenty of time to launch an assault on the PC world, yet it seems efforts to capitalise have been relaxed. On launch the Vista incompatibility catastrophe became quickly evident with manufacturers as large as Dell, quickly performing U-turns on Vista exclusivity policies to calm the nerves of those needing a PC with no teething problems.

Yet, it seems Apple has been reluctant to take advantage of the window of opportunity. Granted figures show shipments of Macs are up 35 year-on-year, however this represents normal growth and has had no impact on the global share ratio.

According to Net Applications, a California based firm tasked with monitoring uptake of operating systems, the Mac has actually seen slight decline, when compared to Microsoft OS's.

your PC market share figures are misleading, at best, why did you leave out other market share figures?

and to the poster "35% is normal growth" what planet did you think 35% growth was normal? 35% growth in apple sales, while PC shipments grow only 6% overall IS THE VERY DEFINITION of taking market share...

here is the example of what the original author is leaving out of what really is going on...

I must agree with the author, that Mac fails to employ the aggressive approach necessary to take advantage of Microsoft's repeted incompetence.

I have no idea who's PC market share growth stats are the more accurate but I do think that "Mr" should relax... try not to take it quite so personally, yeah? Your link's gone by the way.

Mac is, for me, a product design company. And a bloody good one. Their OS is superb but is not produced a method of competing with Windows. The Mac mini Filemaker Pro and iWork are the first tentative steps in the right direction but need development and mass marketing. They have to give disillusioned PC users what they are already used to AND the extra functionality with superior interface that we all know Mac achieve effortlessly.

I often wonder if Apple actually want these PC users, or are they still so "precious" that they feel you need to defect in order to be welcome in their gang?
