Star Wars: The Old Republic

EA and Bioware's new MMORPG

Out with the new, in the with Old Republic. It’s time to get those light sabers out and swing ‘em around online. Helen French goes to the dark side...

The force is with you, always, particularly if you plan on playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, the new MMORPG available from Bioware and EA this December.

It takes place in a galaxy far, far away, but in a time doubly long ago – thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader, when the war between the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire was in full swing.

“In 1977, Lucasfilm created magic with the release of Star Wars. Our goal is to capture some of that magic when we go live with Star Wars: The Old Republic on December 20,” said Dr Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware.

Bioware is well known for its deep and complex role-playing games such as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and gamers will be hoping that the firm, in conjunction with EA and LucasArts, has managed to work its RPG magic into MMO form with this new title.

Players can choose from eight iconic roles such as Jedi Knight, bounty hunter and smuggler. Every choice they make will lead them further on the path to the light or dark side of the force. As befits a major MMO, you can join friends or take part in player vs. player warzones, multi-group operations, guilds, auction houses, crafting and more.

There are companions a-plenty too, and you can build or break these relationships as you see fit – depending on whether you want them fighting at your side or not. It’s even possible to earn your own personal starship eventually, then use it as a base of operations while you explore the galaxy.

Once players have paid out for the base game, which comes with a month of free game time, Star Wars: The Old Republic then costs £8.99 per month, on a par with MMO legend World of Warcraft, or savings can be made by purchasing longer-term options such as three-month (£25.17) or six-month (£46.14) blocks.
