D-Link strikes deal with Silicon Labs to grow smart home market

Connectibity vendor D-Link and chip and IoT firm Silicon Labs have partnered to ‘accelerate smart home technology development and deployment’.

The collaboration brings D-Link’s strength in consumer networking devices with Silicon Labs’ expertise in developing semiconductors and the Internet of Things (IoT) wireless networking technologies, such as ZigBee, Thread, Bluetooth low energy and Wi-Fi.

The firms say this partnership will "offer the companies’ respective customers accelerated access to the latest innovations in smart home and smart metering technologies".

New products will be designed and delivered through D-Links’ supply chain, extending Silicon Labs’ reach into this fast-growing market.

Paul Howard, technical director for D-Link’s European service provider business, said: "D-Link is already actively working with ISPs, telecoms companies and energy providers across Europe on home automation projects.

"Working as a team with Silicon Labs enables us to provide these customers with immediate access to the most advanced mesh networking technologies such as ZigBee and Thread protocols. This approach ensures that they can in turn build compelling, reliable smart home offerings for their customers, which are fully supported and do not have significant up-front engineering costs."

Riku Mettälä, VP of marketing for wireless products at Silicon Labs, added: "Working with D-Link makes our wireless connectivity technology immediately accessible in solutions that consumers are familiar with and from a brand that consumers trust.

"Together, D-Link and Silicon Labs can provide comprehensive IoT solutions that solve the ‘last-meter’ connectivity challenge in a consumer-friendly way. This collaboration also dramatically simplifies the route for service providers to establishing a fully featured smart home package.”

Earlier this year, D-Link said it was looking forward to developing new tech, as it celebrated its 30th anniversary.
