The ICANN administrator of internet addresses has approved plans for a new .xxx domain for pornography.
Proposals for a dedicated adult content top level domain have been in the pipeline since 2004 but the US government previously derailed the plans in the face of significant political opposition.
Supporters of the domain say that it clearly marks the nature of the content of web sites, arguably making it easier to block access to minors and businesses etc.
Despite ICANN approving the domain, the firm’s government advisory committed cited serious reservations with several members opposed to the introduction based on "public policy" concerns.
The ICANN board pointed out that approval by the US politics-influence government advisory committee was not a requirement to approval of the .xxx domain and that "tens of thousands" of adult entertainment companies had applied to reserve over 200,000 .xxx domains.
