Samsung has announced a global recall of all Galaxy Note 7 phones with a UK recall of the phones commencing September 19th.
After news of exploding batteries last week, Samsung has advised that phones that made it onto the UK market will be exchanged. End-users can contact the phone manufacturer directly to arrange an exchange.
Samsung issued a global recall of the phones a day before pre-ordered phones arrived on the UK market because the batteries in the phones were overheating.
A statement from Samsung said: “To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note7.
For customers who already have Galaxy Note7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks.”
In was a disastrous launch of Samsung’s new flagship device which saw market shares plummet and cause an estimated $7 billion dent in Samsung’s market share. In total 2.5 million units have been recalled.
The recall could cost Samsung $1 billion and with Apple expected to reveal its new iPhone 7 today, Samsung could find itself struggling to hold onto its position as a leader in the very competitive world of smartphone sales.
