Phones 4U looks for 160 new stores as it closes Currys concessions

160 Phones 4U concession stands in Currys stores are set to shut before May 2015 following the Dixons/Carphone Warehouse merger.

Phones 4U is now looking to open new stores close to the Currys branches to complete with Dixons Carphone.

“They are not rolling over, they are going to open new stores in similar locations, firstly to keep a presence in the area but also to compete with Carphone,” a source told the Express.

Around 350 staff working in the Currys concessions will be found roles at either new of existing Phones 4U stores.

The news comes as Carphone Warehouse reveals to PCR that it is experiencing an increase in demand for wearable tech.

“Although these devices are still seen as futuristic by many, we are getting more customers enquiring about smart watches and similar devices which adds up to an exciting time for the expanding wearables market,” said a spokesperson.

The first seven Dixons Carphone stores opened up last week. The store-within-a-store will focus on smartphones, wearable tech, home automation and other portable tech.
