HTC teases new flagship ‘U’ phone in Twitter video and confirms release date

HTC has confirmed that the latest version of its new flagship phone will be unveiled to next month. In a five second teaser video, the phone manufacturer revealed that the HTC U will be officially launched on May 16.

From the video, HTC has confirmed that its new handset will be controlled by squeezing in the side. Pressure sensitive buttons dotted around the screen and the sides of the phone have also been mooted to provide various functions, such as launching an app or taking a photo. The same pearlescent rear adopted in the HTC U Ultra will also be featured in the HTC U in a continuation of the ‘U’ branding. Other rumours doing the rounds, suggest a 5.5-inch 1440 x 2560 display is likely to be included in the HTC U.

The new handset joins the two ‘U’ phones that are already on the market. Set apart as HTC’s top range of products, the HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play confusingly were released before the upcoming HTC U.

With the HTC 10 being largely labelled as one of the most underwhelming phones of the last 12 months, the firm will be hoping that May 16 brings about a change of fortune.

Leaving its launch later in the year than usual, HTC has allowed LG, Huawei, Sony and Samsung all to get in ahead of the Taiwanese firm. And with all eyes on the launch of iPhone’s 10-year anniversary edition phone later this year, it is difficult to see where the HTC U will break through.
