2014 finished on unit sales of 75.7 million

Entry-level storage sales finished flat in 2014

Entry-level storage sales have remained flat year-on-year in 2014, according to research.

Analyst IDC has revealed that 2014 finished on unit sales of 75.7 million for entry-level storage devices, with annual shipment values down by 1.5 per cent.

Unit shipments were also slightly down in Q4 2014 with a decline of 0.9 per cent from a year ago to 20.5 million units.

Jingwen Li, research analyst for storage systems, said: "The personal and entry-level storage market finished 2014 flat, despite strong growth during the previous quarter."

Although the entry-level storage market continued to be dominated by non HDD (Hard Disk Drive) vendors, with 42.1 per cent unit shipment market share, the market share shrunk by 17.6 per cent year-on-year.

According to research, HDD vendors gained 14.8 per cent from a year ago on entry-level market shipments.

"The entry-level portion of the market showed consistent growth throughout the year, but it remains too small to drive growth for the entire market," added Li.

Other highlights saw USBs remaining the interface of choice for the Personal and Entry Level Storage (PELS) market, while personal storage represented 98.7 per cent of PELS unit shipments.
