It has emerged that the OLPC may be considering the idea of selling its $100 laptop to consumers to subsidise costs with a price-point of $350 (£175) being mooted.
No firm decision has been made and the company was keen to stress that rather than focusing on commercial interests this year, it would concentrate on developing its presence in developing nations.
It refused to rule out selling the laptop with chief technology officer at OLPC, Mary Lou Jepsen saying that it was in negotiations with major online retailers. However, she declined to name any the companies it as in talks with.
It follows yesterday’s report by PC Retail that the OLPC had given the green light to manufacturing partners to begin mass production of the unit.
Any firm announcement on the availability of the XO laptop is expected within in the next month.
