After releasing its end of year summary, the review aggregation site says last year was one of the lowest scoring years for games.
Throughout its compilation of reviews, the site found that just 18 games earned a score of 90 or above, the lowest since the site began.
In comparison, 2011 saw a total of 32 games break the 90 mark.
Telltale Games’ episodic take on The Walking Dead was the year’s highest rated game, with an aggregate review score of 95.
However, when compared to previous years, it’s the lowest scoring ‘Game of the Year’ since 2003’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which scored 94.
Other games featuring in Metacritic’s top ten include Mass Effect 3, Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, Dishonored, Trials Evolution, Mark of the Ninja, Xenoblade Chronicles, Journey and Persona 4 Golden.
Whilst many of these titles featured on PC, Guild Wars 2 took the crown as the year’s highest rated PC exclusive game of the year.
It is important to remember that Metacritic aggregates game reviews from a wide variety of sources, which it then converts into a score out of 100.
Metacritic’s system has often been labelled as unfair or harsh, as only a game with a 4.5 star rating and above would reach the 90 mark.
