The MP3 Player market is now very well established. Having reached a plateau prior to the widespread availability of smartphones, according to market researcher In-Stat, the market has seen a steady decline in terms of shipments as the emphasis shifted to multi-functional devices.

At this time, the clear dominant player in the sector is Apple. Its various iPod devices currently constitute around 75 per cent of the market, but despite this high market share, a wide range of dedicated music players still thrives.

A key factor here is the importance of the dedicated device. Although Apple does still compete in this space with the iPod Nano, there are a broad variety of devices from other manufacturers offering competitive prices and good levels of storage.

As well as the devices themselves, there is also a strong sales opportunity presented by the accessories to go with them, such as headphones, speakers, cases and docks.

As the Christmas holidays approach, and folks go on the prowl for gifts, the MP3 player market can offer a wide variety of low-cost sales, both in terms of the devices themselves and their accessories, which can serve as an add-on sale as well as a stand alone purchase.
